What are medical disposables? ›

Single-use medical disposables are designed to be used once and then thrown away. They include items like masks, gloves, needles, and IV tubing. These items are often placed in a biohazard bag after they have been used, so that they do not come into contact with patients or other healthcare workers.

Examples include: “Hypodermic needles, syringes, applicators, bandages and wraps, drug tests, exam gowns, face masks, gloves, suction catheters, and surgical sponges.”

Single-use devices are sterilized, individually packaged, disposable instruments that carry none of the risks that reusable instruments do. This is the main reason the shift in using single-use medical devices and disposable medical supplies has occurred.

Disposition (admission vs. discharge) is, of course, the ultimate endpoint for all emergency department visits. However, this does not mean you should begin to think about it toward the end of the patient encounter.

Something disposable is not meant to last. It's OK to throw it out after you use it. Disposable diapers are a good example of what the word disposable is all about: after the diaper is used, it goes straight into the trash, and you can't use it again.
