Stay Local and Save with Kama’aina Deals (2024)

There’s no doubt that the COVID-19 pandemic has battered our local economy. The travel industry has been particularly hard hit by, not only by travel restrictions but the global economic fallout as well. And even though Hawaii hotels began reopening in the latter half of 2020, they’re all still struggling. As a result, to give my travel itch a little scratch, to help support our local travel industry, and to take advantage of some awesome kama’aina deals, I’ve been doing staycations here and there. And if you want to take advantage of these deals too, here’s what you need to know.

Kama’aina Deals

COVID Considerations

It’s worth noting that the hotels are making a concerted effort to provide a safe, clean environment for their guests. That said, other guests often don’t abide by the rules. During my most recent stay at the Waikiki Beach Marriott, other guests often ignored the one family per elevator car rule. And in Waikiki as a whole, I’d say about half the people there weren’t wearing masks, though this greatly depended on what time of day you went out at. So, if you do go, make sure you take the proper precautions.

What’s more, with occupancy rates so low, many hotels have slashed amenities. For example, at the Ritz-Carlton Residences Waikiki Beach, the spa remains closed, while breakfast service has been limited. At the Waikiki Beach Marriott, with the exception of grab-n-go breakfasts, no on-site dining options are currently open. So, be sure to temper your expectations and plan accordingly.

A Word of Caution to World of Hyatt Members

If you’re a fan of Hyatt, your kama’aina options are a bit limited. The hotels under the Hyatt brand seldom offer kama’aina deals. And, when they do, they often make it difficult to find. That said, if you do snag a kama’aina deal at a Hyatt property, you’ll be giving up your World of Hyatt earnings. Hyatt classifies kama’aina rates as non-commissionable rates and, thus, such stays will not earn points and will not count towards elite status.

Not Sure Where to Stay?

If you want to go on a staycation but aren’t sure of where to stay, the best thing to do is to set a budget and let that guide you. With the way rates are these days, you’re bound to find something within your budget that you like. Especially if you stay with the bigger brands such as Marriott and Hilton. That said, you might want to act quickly. Marriott seems to think things will begin getting better around spring break, so their rates shoot straight back up to normal around that time.

Though I’ve stayed at only a small handful of the above hotels, my shortlist of properties I’d recommend, regardless of kama’aina rate availability, include:

  • Alohilani Resort – review
  • Aulani – review
  • Hilton Hawaiian Village – review
  • Hyatt Centric Waikiki Beach – review
  • The Kahala Hotel & Resort
  • The Laylow – review
  • The Ritz-Carlton Residences Waikiki Beach – review
  • Surfjack Hotel
  • Waikiki Beach Marriott – review
  • Andaz Maui – review
  • Courtyard Maui Kahului Airport – review
  • The Grand Wailea
  • Sheraton Maui Resort
  • Courtyard King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel –review
  • Fairmont Orchid
  • The Grand Naniloa Resort
  • Hilton Waikoloa Village
  • Manua Kea Beach Hotel
  • Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts
  • The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort – review
  • Koloa Landing Resort

The above hotels are ones that I’ve either stayed at myself and enjoyed or ones I’ve heard great things about. For those I’ve written reviews for, I’ve included a link to help you along with your decision-making process.

Final Thoughts

While a staycation doesn’t replace actual travel, it does break up the modernity of staying at home. I find them to be a nice change of pace and it feels good to give business to an industry that really needs the help.

At any rate, I hope you all find this post useful. Even if you don’t stay now, keep these tips and codes in mind for the future. Oh, and if Marriott’s Z43 code doesn’t return any results, you can try L6C too. Thanks for reading! I hope you all stay safe and healthy.
