Don't miss the keynote by Professor Dr. Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker

"Come on! What we have to change to survive"
This is the gripping and encouraging title of this year's keynote speech at the VGB Congress in Essen, Germany.

Today's world with climate change as the biggest challenge of our time needs a new enlightenment. Many thought patterns still originate from a time when the world was empty, mankind small and nature immeasurable. The biologist, environmental politician and bestselling author Prof. Dr. Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker is one of the 100 most influential thinkers of our times. He has been co-president of the Club of Rome since 2012. The list of his awards and titles is impressive: Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, German Environmental Prize, Theodor Heuss Prize, three honorary doctorates, former chairman of the Environment Committee of the German Bundestag, head of the California Environmental University. His lectures are exciting, his energy is contagious. We expect an exciting talk around the topics of climate change, resource conservation and energy efficiency. Don’t miss it!

Similar to any conventional power plant, hydropower plants and their components such as turbines and hydraulic systems as well as drives for gates, slides and flaps, require large quantities of lubricating oils. Regular inspections and thus the early detection of system malfunctions and impending damage ensure the safe and smooth operation of power plants and prevent unscheduled unavailabilities and repairs.

From 20 to 28 July 2021, a German-Indian team coordinated by the VGB conducted flexibility test runs at the Maithon power plant. The investigations were carried out in the 525 MW unit 2 of the power plant which is situated in the state of Jharkhand and operated by Tata Power. The record value of 190 MW minimum load was achieved. Further tests with regard to load ramps and coal distribution provided further valuable input in order to derive measures for permanent flexible operation.

    B035-ebook

Power plants are not functioning to the fullest 100 % of the time. Maintenance and inspection of some components require them to be off-line in time, however, this can be planned such that customers continue receiving power from the electrical grid, steam or district heating from other plants. Unplanned outages due to failures or external conditions may cause surprises and can lead to situations in which the demand is not satisfied at short term at large costs.
